Political Indoctrination - Hizb ut-Tahrir America

Political Indoctrination

“The Jews will never be pleased with you, nor the Christians, unless you follow their faith. Say, “Indeed guidance from Allah alone is the true guidance.” And if you were to follow their evil desires after the knowledge you have been given, you will find neither a guardian nor any helper to protect you from Allah.” TMQ 2:120

What is political indoctrination?

States are always concerned about the political climate and public opinion of their nations. Ideally, the rulers of such states want citizenry that will believe in their ideology and way of life. Walter Lippman (1949), the deceased American intellectual, first coined the phrase “manufacture of consent” to explain how states produce public opinion in order to keep the consent of their populations. Political indoctrination is a mechanism by which the public opinion is created. If this first objective cannot be accomplished, then they want citizens that will at least comply with their systems and not persuade others to become problems either. States dislike radicals and revolutionaries for this reason.  This is because those who are aware of institutional and structural problems, and care to challenge or change them, seek fundamental change.

There are many mechanisms a state uses to accomplish its goal of staying in power and keeping the status quo. Essentially, states use soft and hard methods that are implemented by their institutions, personnel, or hire others (agents and institutional leaders for example) to accomplish its goals. We are primarily discussing the current reality of the failed Kufr Western states—be they capitalist or pseudo socialist.

Today, we observe several soft and hard methods that the Kufr States of today apply in order to stay in power and keep the system going; 1. Indoctrinating methods 2. Fear methods 3. Punitive methods.  The indoctrinating methods are ways that the system tries to convince or trick the people into believing in its way of life. The system or state uses its institutions (governmental, educational, correctional, mass media, etc.) to indoctrinate its citizenry. The media and political institutions are the primary ways of doing this, they go hand and hand, and this will be the focus of this article. The media promotes values of the ideology of the state, and demonizes any potential threats to the system while promoting the political agenda of the state.

The fear method is one where punishments and the potential loss of rights and/or benefits are presented to the people implicitly or explicitly.  The loss of funding to your organization, being fired, deported, imprisoned, or murdered might be the case!

How does it relate to the Ummah?

The political indoctrinating and fear methods are the primary methods used today to contain our communities within kufr Western states. The push to have Muslims assimilate into non-Islamic systems and states is a part of the political indoctrinating process. Thus, having Muslims participate in voting to implement secular capitalism, as other non-Muslims do is a great desire of the kufr States that the Muslims currently live in. Obeying and submitting to the political indoctrination of the enemies of Islam will only push the Ummah toward the hellfire. We must remember this and be aware of the plots and plans of the political leaders.

“O ye who believe! If ye obey the Unbelievers, they will drive You back on Your heels, and ye will turn back (from Faith) to Your own loss.”
TMQ 3:149

As part of the indoctrination, Muslims are encouraged on one hand to become more European or American, while on the other hand they are demonized by the Western media. The agenda is the same; to have Muslims either believe in the kufr western way of life or shut up and go along with it although they might disbelieve in Kufr. These Western kufr states create nationalistic and patriotic bonds among the people through their culturing institutions. Hence, they raise the pressure on Muslims to choose where their loyalties lie, they create a dislike for Muslims and they’re viewed as un-American or French.

How does it relate to Muslims in America

Muslims should understand the reality of their surroundings, as well as the objectives and tools used by the states they live in. The American State pushes for political indoctrination and religious pluralism while using the media and its agents to do this. The fear method is the stick used to ensure that the leaders in the Muslim communities comply with the political whims of the American government. “We will pull your funding, put you on the terrorist list, deport you, close your masjids, etc.” The chief role of any leader of any major institution, and that includes those who fund non-for profit organizations in America, is to ensure that political indoctrination and religious pluralism occur, and if not, at the very least that the fear methods work to ensure that no headaches arise for the government.

Oh Muslims, we must stop to think Who is our Lord? Who do we fear? Who will cause our death?

“It is only Shaitan (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliya’ [supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger, Muhammad SAW)], so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers.” TMQ 3: 175

Will our children grow up putting their loyalty in a system that is not working for the people and literally taking them to the hellfire?  To say that we should accept, and be comfortable being ruled by a political system that allows alcohol, homosexuality, riba, porn, and anything else that secular man made  laws allows, is insane, and more importantly not accepted by Allah (swt). Do we want our children and their children to grow up secular and disbelieving? Do we want to see them in the hellfire? There is no such thing as the Abrahamic faith. This pluralistic concept implies that all of the religions are basically the same. Thus, there really is not a need to pick the right one. We as Muslims reject this idea completely. This idea is clearly being pushed to further politically assimilate Muslims in America.  We don’t want our children to grow up like others, addicted to drugs and alcohol, in gangs, confused about what Allah said they are as men, women, and Muslims, and disconnected from the Ummah and Islam.

What we must do to resist it

“Certainly you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for him who hopes in Allah and the last day and remembers Allah much.”
TMQ 33:21

Islam defines for us a specific way of life and a specific belief system. The messenger of Allah (saw) struggled hard in Makkah against the systems of Kufr pointing out its oppression and calling people to submit to Islam. He is our only example to follow for all times and places, including right here in America.

“Therefore expound openly what you are commanded and turn away from those who join false gods with Allah. For sufficient are We unto you against those who scoff. Those who adopt, with Allah another god: but soon will they come to know.”
TMQ 15:94-96

We must follow what Islam tells us to do, and not what the agents of the state tell us to do. We must believe in Islam as a deen (complete way of life) that deals with every aspect of life. Islam is the only way of life that is the Haqq (truth). We do not believe in religious pluralism or in man made political systems that go against what Allah has revealed.

“Quite a number of the People of the Book wish they could turn you (people) back to infidelity after ye have believed. From selfish envy, after the Truth hath become manifest unto them.” TMQ 2:109

We need to demand good leadership from our leaders, and the good leadership is what Allah tells us, not the Kuffar. We must encourage those amongst us who have the courage to stand up and lead us, and remind those who are afraid that Allah is greater.

The solution to our problems

Islam is a complete way of life, and this specific way of life cannot be realized while there is no State that implements it. It is haram to practice kufr in any form.  It is an obligation to stand out for justice and call people to Islam as the mercy and salvation for humanity.  We must resist anything that calls us to compromise our deen. We should be aware of the political plots and schemes of the Kuffar. We have to encourage our brothers to be strong and educate our youth on Islam while realizing that the only security and prosperity is in the Khilafah State. Anyone or any organization, especially if it claims to be an Islamic one should avoid to participate in the methods discussed above.  Political indoctrination and religious pluralism/interfaith do not come out of the thin air. They are directly pushed by governments to control its citizenry. From the Islamic perspective, we are commanded by Allah to live as Muslims and to die in obedience. As part of this, we must respond to the rules of Allah no matter the political consequences.  At the top of the list of obligations demanded by Allah is to rule by Islam. We must make this call and work for it in order that the khilafah be re-established.

“O you [Muhammad (Peace be upon him)] enveloped (in garments)! Arise and warn! And your Lord (Allah) magnify! And your garments purify! And keep away from ar-rujz (the idols)!” TMQ 74:1-5
